摘要

The concept of sustainability, as well as reporting, have a long tradition within the German forest sector. However, the trend to publish so called sustainability reports in other industries gains more public interest. Therefore the following paper analyses the sustainability reporting of German state owned forestry services. For these purposes an analysis scheme as used in non-forestry sustainability reports but specifically adjusted for the forestry sector was applied to eleven recent forest reports and interviews with the forestry services were conducted. Analysis and interviews show that the majority of state forestry services are regularly publishing detailed reports, which can be classified as a mixture of forest- and business reporting. The set of common information identified is rather small: typical information provided are e.g. the presentation of the forestry service, economic results, annual fellings, mean prices per cubic meter sold timber. On the other hand differences can be found in form and content, pointing at different interpretations of sustainability within the forestry services. An improved comparability between the reports can help to focus the discussion regarding public forestry on forestry facts rather than forestry services' specialties. Therefore a critical assessment of forestry reports, as it is suggested here, can serve as a first step.
