The maintainability evaluation of a product is an efficient way to optimize product design and improve product quality. While there are some problems in the existing research, for example, the evaluation procedure is not standardized and is practically too complicated to operate. Therefore, there is a need to establish a new method to evaluate product maintainability. In the presented study, a concept and connotation of product maintainability combined with actual demand is proposed. Based on the theory of product life cycle, the evaluation index system of product maintainability and its calculation model are established considering its inherent attributes and external factors at the same time. The weight coefficient of each indicator can be calculated by using fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (FAHP), then experts give scores for each indicator according to maintenance projects. Finally, the maintainability can be calculated. In the case study, the maintainability of the transmission is 0.778 through evaluation, and the maintainability can increase to 0.860 which belongs to the level of extremely high by improving some indicators. This is also in line with the evaluation results when it takes routine maintenance efforts and efficiency into consideration. The proposed method in this paper achieves good results and is beneficial to the standardization of the entire evaluation process.
