摘要

The current work is related to identification of intrusion events of stratospheric ozone into the troposphere over the Aegean Sea and it assesses their influence on tropospheric ozone distribution of Eastern Mediterranean (EM). The EM region shows one of the highest tropospheric ozone levels around the globe. The analysis was based on the MACC (Monitoring Atmospheric Composition and Climate) reanalysis global fields of atmospheric composition and meteorological parameters for the summer months July and August for the period 2003-2012. The identification algorithm for possible stratospheric intrusion events was based on statistical filtering criteria with simultaneously very dry air conditions and high ozone concentrations in the lower free troposphere (at 700 hPa). Several meteorological and atmospheric composition parameters were investigated for selected days. The tropospheric ozone fields for the selected days and their anomalies from the average conditions indicate quantitatively for the MACC reanalysis the important role of stratosphere to troposphere transport for the pool of high ozone over EM during summer in agreement with recent studies. Furthermore our analysis reveals that long range transport of NOx exported from East Asia could also partially contribute to the higher ozone values of EM through enhanced photochemical production.
