Development of Liquid Nitrogen Cooled RE-Ba-Cu-O (RE = Rare Earth) Superconducting Magnet for NMR Use

We have developed a RE-Ba-Cu-O (REBCO; RE = rare earth) superconducting magnet operated in subcooled liquid nitrogen (67 K). The superconducting magnet is composed of a stack of six double pancake (DP) coils. Each DP coil was made of a REBCO coated conductor. The conductor was insulated by polyimide tape wrappings. The width and thickness of the insulated conductor were 4 and 0.2 mm, respectively. The cold bore, outer diameter, and height of the fabricated DP stack are 52, 107, and 68 mm, respectively. The number of turns was 1542. Ferro-magnetic steel flanges were equipped on both ends of the magnet to improve performance. The magnet generated 1.55 T stably at 65 A in 67 K. H-1 NMR spectrum of CuSO4 aqueous solution was obtained at 64.48 MHz (1.51 T). The temporal stability and the spatial homogeneity of the magnetic field were investigated by the NMR probe.
