A design study of microscale magnetic components for operation in the MHz frequency range

The potential of a microinductor utilizing a thin film magnetic alloy magnetic component is investigated via a simplified optimal design procedure. A well-established solenoid geometry is utilized to compare commercially available and electrodeposited alloys. Analytical and experimental analysis is concerned with the MHz frequency range for dc-dc converters. Inductance values ranging from 0.3 mu H to 120 mu H with component power efficiency above 90% have been measured. An optimal design process is developed based on preliminary data providing a device with a power density of 28 W cm(-3) and power efficiency of 94%.
