Luminescence Properties of an Orange-Reddish Emitting Phosphor KCaBi(PO4)(2):Sm3+ with Excellent Thermal Stability

A series of Sm3+ activated KCaBi(PO4)(2) with orange-reddish (0.571, 0.424) (CCT = 1847 K) light emitting phosphors were prepared by the solid state method. Their crystal structure and phase composite were analyzed by X-ray diffraction patterns (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Upon excitation at 405 nm, the emission spectra ranged from 500 nm to 750 nm wavelength, corresponding to (4)G(2)-H-6(J) (J = 5/2, 7/2, 9/2 and 11/2) transitions of Sm3+ ions. The optimum doping concentration of Sm3+ ions was turned out to be 0.04, and the concentration quenching mechanism was verified as dipole-dipole interaction using Dexter's theory. The critical distance R-c for energy transfer among Sm3+ ions were calculated to be 20.53 angstrom. In addition, the detailed investigation of decay time and thermal stability revealed that the PL intensity of representative sample KCaBi(PO4)(2):0.04Sm(3+) at 150 degrees C only dropped 9.1% of its primitive intensity recorded at room temperature with an activation energy of 0.4099 eV. Besides this, the color purity of the representative sample KCaBi(PO4)(2):0.04Sm(3+) was 94.5%. These findings proved the potential application of KCaBi(PO4)(2):0.04Sm(3+) phosphors in w-LEDs.
