Approximate Versus Exact Near Field Formulation for a Cylindrical Electric Dipole

This contribution analyzes in a quantitative way the properties of two closed form equations, and their results in near field, for the radiation of an electric dipole. One kind of equation describe the near field radiation of an elementary dipole, the other kind describe the radiation from a similar structure but taking into account its geometrical properties and the spatial distribution of the current. The differences of the results, in terms of magnitude and phase of the electric and magnetic field components, are shown in function of the radial distance from the source, of the frequency of the feeding current, on planar surfaces always in the near field region of the radiating dipole. The accuracy of the closed form expression is quantified by comparison with the results obtained by an accurate three-dimensional full wave model solved by the finite difference technique in time domain.
