Application of the Taguchi Method for the Optimization of an Amine-based Tail Gas Treating Unit in Petroleum Refineries

Taguchi experimental design method was used as a process optimization tool for an amine-based process. Quench temperature, quench flow, absorber pressure, absorber packing, amine flow, amine temperature, and H2S concentration in lean amine were the processed factors through Taguchi method. Three different orthogonal arrays (L-16, L-18, and L-9) were employed for optimization. The designated experiments were simulated by Aspen-Plus software. It was found that absorber pressure, amine temperature, and H2S concentration in lean amine were the most important factors. The optimum value for these parameters was 6 atm, 40 degrees C, and 1,000 ppm, respectively.
