We study the interface dynamics of a directionally solidifying binary alloy in the presence of a constant velocity flow imposed far from the solid-liquid interface. A strongly nonlinear interface equation is derived near the limit of absolute stability. Using multiscale techniques, we show that the interface is given by a travelling wave propagating against the imposed flow, modulated by an amplitude depending on longer scales in time and space. If this travelling wavelength is perturbed, the dynamics of the amplitude change markedly with the sign and magnitude of this wavelength shift.
