The optimum relay selection is a key problem in cooperative communications. It tries to find an optimum relay node among a large number of candidate relay nodes. This issue can greatly reduce the performance of the cooperative communication systems, if not handling wisely. For this reason, a lot of optimum relay selection algorithms have been proposed in the literature. In these algorithms, they treat the communication channels as single path channels. However, the communication channels in the reality are multi-path channels, due to the reflections and refractions. Thus, the conventional algorithms usually cannot choose the optimal relay node in multi-path situations. So, this paper proposes a new algorithm by considering the multi-path effects, and selects the corresponding real optimum relay node. This is achieved by finding the relay node which can help the whole transmission to have the minimum average error rate under multi-path environments, using the optimal Rake receiver. Simulation results have demonstrated that the proposed algorithm can significantly boost the system performance, compared with the traditional algorithms.
