摘要

The ring shake phenomenon which occurs in Castanea sativa is the cause of decreased chestnut wood production across Europe. Although the exact causes which lead to the appearance of this defect are yet unknown, it is widely believed that age and annual growth are two of the most important factors. In this paper we present a methodology which will allow forest managers to predict the possibility of ring shake appearance on standing trees. This prediction will be based on the measurement of age and annual growth. These two factors will then be used in order to train and test an artificial neural network (ANN), which will be responsible for the prediction of ring shake phenomenon.
