A fiber optic glucose biosensor based on complex optical sensing membrane and lock-in amplifying technology was developed. The sensing membrane contained both the GOD immobilized on SiO2 nanopartilces and photosensitizer Ru(bpy)(3)Cl-2. The preparation of the complex optical membrane and the biosensor properties were studied. The detection limit (S/N = 3) of the glucose biosensor was 6.0 mg/dL (0.33 mM) with the linear range from 50 mg/dL similar to 700 mg/dL (2.78 mM similar to 38.89 mM) (Y = 0.00127X+0.197, R-2 = 0.9928). The response time of this biosensor was 15 s. The biosensor exhibited repeatable response to a 100 mg/dL (5.56 mM) glucose solution with a relative standard deviation of 2.96% (n = 10). Common potential interferents in samples do not cause any significant interference on the response of the fiber optic glucose biosensor.
