Hydroview(A (R)) intraocular lenses-3 year follow up

To evaluate the frequency of lens opacification regarding hydrogel intraocular lenses (Hydroview(A (R)), Bausch & Lomb). From a total number of 355 intraocular lenses of the batches in question implanted at our centre, 110 eyes received follow up examination up to 3 years postoperatively. Most of them had been implanted during standard cataract surgery using only Healon(A (R)) as viscoelastic. Only one patient developed lens opacification after combined pars plana vitrectomy, cataract surgery and lens implantation. In this case, a contamination of the lens with methylcellulose used for corneal protection was documented during surgery. All other lenses remained clear. Possible causes for opacification of hydrogel intraocular lenses are discussed.
