The (Tb0.36Dy0 (64))(1-x) HoxFe2 magnetostrictive alloys with (110) orientation were prepared by zone melting directionally solidified method. The magnetostrictive performance and hysteresis of (110) aligned polycrystalline (Tb0.36Dy0 (64))(1-x) HoxFe2 under compressive stresses of 0, 5, 10 MPa were investigated. An obvious magnetostriction " jump " effect under compressive stress was observed in these (110) aligned polycrystalline (Tb0.36Dy0 (64))(1-x) HoxFe2 samples. The (Tb0.36Dy0 (64))(1-x) HoxFe2 alloys (x <0.3) has the character of giant magnetostriction in a wide operating temperature range from -60 to 80 degrees C. The hysteresis, represented by the width of magnetostriction versus the applied field, was reduced dramatically due to the addition of Ho element. Compared to the Tb0.36Dy0.64Fe1.95 alloy (x=0) with hysteresises of 10.4, 13.5, 16.6 kA/m under compressive stresses of 0, 5, 10 MPa, the magnetostriction hysteresises reduced to 9.3, 11.6, 13.7 kA/m for x=0.1; to 7.5, 10.8, 12.9 kA/m for x=0.2 and to 5.4, 8.8, 9.8 kA/rn for the alloy with x=0.3, respectively.
