We report a novel but inexpensive technique to produce a transparent, chemically robust and nanostructured porous Al2O3 layer on glass surface (PAOG). Functional species can be conveniently immobilized onto PAOG in a controlled way and naturally presented in a nano-configuration. The experiments showed that Ag/PAOG was capable of detecting 10(-10) M aqueous crystal violet (CV) for SERS and had excellent antimicrobial function for Escherichia coli (E.coli). PAOG is a versatile and powerful platform for convenient immobilization and nano-configuration of functional chemicals for researchers in various disciplines.
