摘要

The rhea (Rhea americana) is a South American bird of the ratite group, order Rheiformes, that is exploited for economic purposes. The objective of this study was to obtain haematological values of the species in captivity in the city of Teresina-Piaui State. Were used 10 animals. Were collected 3mL from peripheral blood of each animal for haematological analyses, by puncturing the arm vein, using a disposable syringe. To determine haematocrit the method of microhematocrit was used; for haemoglobin, we used the technique of cyanmethemoglobin; for counts of erythrocytes and leukocytes, we used the technique of the haemocytometer for poultry, the leukocyte count was made by counting 100 cells by blade, in triplicate, for each animal. The haematocrit ranged from 30-45, mean 39.6%; haemoglobin from 9.4 to 26, mean 16.3 g/dL; erythrocyte count from 1.6 x10(6) to 2.9 x10(6), mean 2.4 x10(6) per mm(3) of blood; total leukocyte count from 3,000-18,500, mean 8,693 per mm(3). The values for differential leukocyte counts are: heterophile from 52 to 78, mean 62.1%, totalling 1,689 to 14,430, mean 5,706 per mm(3) of blood; eosinophil's from 0.3 to 3.1, mean 2.2%, 39 to 360, mean 176.4; basophils from 1 to 6, mean 2.7%, 58 to 363, mean 208.2; monocytes from 1.4 to 9.7, mean 6.0%, 171 to 1,115, mean 450.2; lymphocytes from 17.7 to 34.3, mean 27.0%, 921 to 3,515, mean 2,142. It is concluded that the values found are reference values for the species reared in semiconfinement.
