Description of an Outbreak of Bovine Digital Dermatitis at the Miranda Municipality of the Zulia State, Venezuela (First Report)

With the intention of communicating the first description of Bovine Digital Dermatitis (BDD) in Venezuela, injuries characterization and the establishment of a diagnostic methodology, three farms of Miranda Municipality of Zulia State with foot diseases compatible with BDD were selected. Twenty dual purpose crossbred cows, claudication or palpation pain and ulcerous injuries located to the heels and next the interdigital space were studied. The injuries were evaluated clinically, considering the size, clinical form, pain to the palpation and claudication. Skin biopsies were performed for histopathology and scraping for microscopic identification of spirochetes. The size of the most common injury was from 8 to 16 cm(2) (50%), the predominant aspect, was erosive and granular (80%) and claudication was a finding inconsistent. One hundred percent of the injuries was located on the rear foot, 85% of them was located in the plantar area along the interdigital space, the most encountered commonly forms were to circulate and oval (65 and 30%, respectively) and 75% of the studied injuries did not affect the corneum stratum. The pathological diagnosis corresponded with chronic dermatitis hyperplasic compatible with BDD. The smears made with the skin scraping, dyed with Loeffler blue, allowed the display of spirochetes compatible with Treponema spp. In conclusion, the BDD is a disease that is present in the Miranda Municipality of the Zulia State. The absence of precedents investigations in the region and the rest of the country, allow to conclude that it is first report on DDB in Venezuela.
