A novel metal ion-mediated reaction of 2-benzoylpyridine in acetonitrile under strongly basic conditions has led to a 1:2 square planar Ni(II) complex containing the anion of 3-hydroxy-3-phenyl-(3-pyridin-2-yl)propanenitrile as ligand; the complex has been characterized by single-crystal X-ray crystallography and various spectroscopic techniques.
