Phenolics and flavonoids contents in methanol extracts of Olea ferruginea Royle seeds, an underutilized fruit tree crop of north western Himalayan were quantified and their antioxidant activities were evaluated at two different stages of seed maturity in this paper. Total phenolics and flavoinoid contents (108 and 20%, respectively) were higher in ripe seeds as compared to those of the raw seeds. Significant increase in 1,1-diphenyl-2-pycrylhydrazyl (p < 0.05) and ferric reducing antioxidant power activities (p < 0.05) and an insignificant decrease in 2,2'-azinobis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid (p > 0.05) activity of methanol extracts of the ripe seeds were found as compared to that of raw seeds. The present study concludes that ripe seeds of O. ferruginea Royle is an important source of natural antioxidants and also exhibit a strong antioxidant activity and thus can be used as a source of foods by the local population and natural antioxidants in pharmaceutical and food industries.
