Several surveys have investigated the deposits located in the Galician rias, and those studies demonstrate an increase in the sedimentation rates upwards, which is attributed to the anthropic influence. This paper tries to correlate these results with demographic and social processes produced in Galicia in the last two centuries. Sedimentation rates have been analysed for this purpose, in comparison with population trends in the catchment areas, as well as other indicative data of social and economic changes. A detailed study of the facies distribution of the sediments which have been accumulated in the estuarine and coastal marshes has been carried out. Sediment distribution and facies analysis were obtained by coring along several transects in the estuarine and coastal environments (Ria de Vigo) or lagoon environments (Louro). Marine shells and wood fragments were collected on the coastal sediments for C-14 dating, allowing calculations of sediment rates. In Ramallosa complex, sedimentation rates are lower from 2001 to 484 years BP than from 480 years BP to present. In San Simon bay, sedimentation rates for the upper 0.42 m are 5.52 +/- 0.43 mm/a to 6.04 +/- 2.05 mm/a. In the Louro barrier-lagoon, the upper intervals show a sedimentation rate which fluctuates between 2.7 and 4.4 mm/a for the period between 610 BP and the present time. The study of the evolution of the population in the surrounding areas reinforces the interpretation of the results which suggest an important incidence of human activity in the increase of the sedimentation rates in the last 100 years.
