For a set Gamma, a function lambda : Gamma -> Gamma and a nontrivial abelian group K, the generalized shift sigma(lambda) : K(Gamma) -> K(Gamma) is defined by (x(i))(i is an element of Gamma) -> (x(lambda(i)))(i is an element of Gamma) [3]. In this article we compute the algebraic entropy of sigma(lambda); it is either zero or infinite, depending exclusively on the properties of lambda. This solves two problems posed in [2].
