Novel Preparation of Bamboo Biochar and Its Application on Cationic Dye Removal

A series of porous biochars were prepared from common bamboo precursors at high carbonization rates (i.e., 110-170 K/min) in an induction-heating pyrolysis system. Under the investigated experimental conditions, the heating rate of around 150 K/min was found to be the optimum for producing microporous biochar materials with high surface area (over 250 m(2)/g) and large pore volume (over 0.12 cm(3)/g). Based on the data on the chemical characterization and the analyses of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, the majority of functional groups on the surface of the resulting bamboo biochars contained significant oxygen complex. This was in agreement with the results of oxygen contents ranging from 14 to 18 wt%. The adsorption results of cationic dye (i.e., methylene blue) in an aqueous solution with bamboo biochars showed that the resulting biochar materials can effectively treat wastewater due to their surface functional groups and moderate pore properties.
