A linkage between two domains of chemistry through the synthesis of inorganic complexes during practical works
To understand inorganic chemistry, the students must acquire several notions of different fields of chemistry. Practical sessions based on it can help them to broaden their point of view toward chemistry by doing organic and complexation experiments, and present to them several recent and useful applications (LED and magnetic, catalytic or biological applications). This paper presents a procedure for the synthesis of an organic ligand, the bisalophen, and its complexation by copper(II) and nickel(11) metal ions. It has been successfully realized in 3h by students of University Paris 11 and illustrates the imine formation as well as complexation (reaction and site of reaction). Finally, the work-up of the reaction and the full characterization of the products (H-1 NMR, IR, TLC and UV-visible) are detailed.
