Hybrid Atomization: Processing parameters and disintegration modes

Hybrid Atomization is a new atomization technique that combines free fall gas atomization with centrifugal atomization. This process can produce fine, spherical powders economically with a size of about 10mum diameter and a tight size distribution. Experiments on the process were carried out using a Sn-9w/oZn alloy to investigate the influence of processing parameters on powder characteristics and to optimize atomizing conditions. An atomization mode diagram is developed which is applicable to centrifugal atomization and hybrid atomization. The primary atomization mechanism under normal hybrid atomization conditions is predicted to be film splitting in the direct drop formation mode, accompanied by non-filming in the direct drop formation mode as a minor component.
