Indolizidine and quinolizidine derivatives are readily assembled from L-proline or (+/-)-pipecolic acid and beta-ketoaldehydes via a decarboxylative annulation process. These reactions are promoted by acetic acid and involve azomethine ylides as reactive intermediates.
