Agroecology has as an objective the understanding of the key elements and processes that regulate the function of agrosystems, for their effective management in harmony with the environment. Plant protection has been focused on the concept of control, mainly utilizing chemical or biological arsenals, and more recently, the biotechnological. The application of ecological criteria in plant protection has allowed the implementation of the biofumigation processes, a technique based on the utilization of gases produced during the biodescomposition of organic matter to manage soilborne phytopathogenic organisms. It is hoped that future improvements in agriculture will consider the increasing worries related to the environment, the conservation of the natural resources, public health, and highlighting attention of the importance of agriculture in the elimination of poverty, as well as its contribution to the development of biofuels. La agroecolog赤a tiene como objetivo el conocimiento de los elementos y procesos claves en el funcionamiento de los agrosistemas, para su eficaz gesti車n en armon赤a con el ambiente. La protecci車n vegetal ha sido enfocada tradicionalmente, bajo el concepto de lucha y control, utilizando arsenales qu赤micos o biol車gicos y, en estos momentos, biotecnol車gicos. La aplicaci車n de criterios ecol車gicos en protecci車n vegetal ha permitido desarrollar procesos como la biofumigaci車n, fundamentada en la utilizaci車n de los gases resultantes de la biodescomposici車n de la materia org芍nica para el manejo de organismos pat車genos de los vegetales. Es de esperar que el futuro de la agricultura muestre una mayor preocupaci車n por el ambiente, la conservaci車n de los recursos naturales, la salud de las personas y se destaque su contribuci車n a la reducci車n de la pobreza, as赤 como su aportaci車n al desarrollo de los agrocombustibles.
