Damping capacity associated with precipitation in Mg2Si/Mg-9Al composite materials

Damping capacities of Mg2Si/Mg-9Al after aging treatment at different temperatures and times were investigated. The present paper focuses on the relationship between damping capacities and aging temperature and time. Results show that strain independent damping capacities increase and strain dependent damping values decrease for long time aging. Particular emphasis is placed on the characteristics of grain boundary damping peaks at high temperature. Damping peaks produced by the relaxation of grain boundaries have lower temperature with smaller activation energy when aging time is prolonged to 12 h, which can be explained by the growth up and coarsening of precipitates around grain boundaries.
