Antibiotic residue detection in black tiger prawn (Penaeus monodon Fabric.) in the Philippines using the Modified Four Plate Test

A study was conducted to investigate the antibiotic residues in black tiger prawn (Penaeus monodon Fabric.). Two hundred sixty-four head parts of prawn samples were collected from the different farm sources in Bulacan and Quezon Provinces. Modified Four Plate Test was used to test the residues: Four plates with different pH were used to test each sample. Sample tissues were placed as duplicate, on plates with pH 6.0, 7.2 and 8.0 which were seeded with Bacillus subtilis and plate with pH 8.0 which was seeded with Micrococcus luteus. All plates were incubated at 37 degrees C for 24 hr. Out of 264 samples, 51 or 19.32% were found positive for antibiotic residues.
