摘要

Children growing up in a multilingual setting are common in Germany. They do not attain the same educational success as monolingual children, however, and their parents are concerned and in need for early counselling. We report on parental data from a German questionnaire study: How do parents handle multilingualism at home? To what extent are they concerned about their children's language and further development? What kind of counselling have they received? Paediatricians, who are regularly contacted by parents of young children, deal with multilingualism. We investigate their diagnostic means, advice on multilingualism, feeling of competency and the service paediatricians initiate when multilingual children show clinically relevant language problems. We discuss the implications for practice and introduce early intervention and counselling programmes for parents of multilingual children that have just been developed.
