摘要

Downhill grades are some of the most dangerous road conditions since use of the brake to control speed often results in overheating of the brake pad, causing serious accidents. Thus, the engine torques should be used to control the speed. The study uses a vehicle dynamics model to model the downhill grade force and resistance. The results show that the engine torque alone cannot restrain the vehicle acceleration on a steep downhill grade without down shifting. This paper also obtains the method on when to shift on downhill grades.
