Because the abutment connects the submucosally located endosseous implant with the oral cavity and its microbiota, it is a crucial interface. It simultaneously forms the conjuction of the endosseous implant and prosthetic elements as well as the interface of biological tissues and biomaterials. The epithelial seal occurs here, meaning that the abutment represents a seal between the body%26apos;s interior and the environment of the oral cavity. This article focusses on aspects of macro- and microscopic abutment design.
