<jats:p> The expression for entropy production owing to diffusion used in Hackl <jats:italic>et al.</jats:italic> (2010 <jats:italic>Proc. R. Soc. A</jats:italic> <jats:bold>467</jats:bold> , 1186–1196. ( <jats:related-article xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" ext-link-type="doi" page="1186" related-article-type="corrected-article" vol="467" xlink:href="10.1098/rspa.2010.0179">doi:10.1098/rspa.2010.0179</jats:related-article> )) has led to some discussion concerning its definition and comparability with terms found in the literature. Therefore, in this addendum, we introduce a slight modification which leads to a more consistent result that can be better interpreted in the light of existing literature. </jats:p>
