Non-Catalyzed Polymerization of Sodium Ethylenesulfonate

摘要

Sodium ethylenesulfonate (ESNa) polymerized with no initiator. ESNa was polymerized under various polymerization conditions to examine the mechanism of this non-catalized polymerization. As the pH value of the polymerization system increased, the polymerization rate decreased and the molecular weight of obtained polymers increased. In the absence of oxygen in the polymerization system, the polymerization rate and the molecular weight of the polymers increased compared with the case in the presence of oxygen. ESNa did not polymerized in the presence of radical inhibitor. Using the mixture of water and methanol as a solvent, ESNa did not polymerized. On the basis of these results, the polymerization of ESNa in water without any catalysts is a new type of non-catalyzed polymerization involving radical intermediate.
