摘要

The prevalence of the wildland urban interface in the southern United States is leading to new issues and challenges for forest management. Helping landowners harvest timber or protect forest ecosystem services requires new skills on the part of consulting, county, and extension foresters. Recognizing that these development patterns are rapidly changing the landscape, the Southern Group of State Foresters sponsored a professional development program to help field staff address the challenges of forest harvesting in fragmented patches, working with planners and land-use policy makers, and communicating with residents and other stakeholders. Resource professionals in Texas have been trained in this flexible and highly adaptable set of materials and have used the program to generate new strategies for reaching the public. This case study briefly describes Changing Roles: Wild land Urban Interface Professional Development Program and the Texas experience.
