A case of mitochondrial myopathy in a four-month-old mixed-breed dog
A four-month-old Schnauzer-mix was presented with an exercise intolerance. The clinical examination revealed evidence of mitochondrial myopathy. Thoracic radiographs were found to be normal. Electromyography was also within normal limits. Muscle biopsies were taken and showed an alteration of size and structure in the mitochondria. A decrease in oxidative activity was noted. These are histopathological signs for unspecific mitochondrial myopathy. Such damage in the mitochondria leads to a loss of enzyme activity. Furthermore, it leads to a loss of oxidative phosphorylation and energy in the muscle cells. Obviously, the dog's exercise intolerance was due to the energy loss in its muscle cells. So far the aetiology of this disease is unknown; therefore, conservative treatment with exercise restriction was chosen. Six months after he was first presented, the patient still showed episodes of weakness lasting for a few minutes; however, most of the time the patient remained free of symptoms.
