Disequilibrium of dissolved U-234/U-238 and Po-210/Pb-210 in Greek rivers

For the first time, a radiological study for the dissolved U-238, U-234, Pb-210 and Po-210 was held in major Greek rivers across the country. U-234/U-238 activity ratios are above one in all samples and Po-210/Pb-210 activity ratios are respectively below the unit indicating the disequilibrium in the samples. Quite satisfactory correlations were observed among U-234 and U-238 as well as among Po-210 and Pb-210 values. Uranium isotopes were separated by ion exchange and electroplated on stainless steel plates. Po-210 was spontaneously deposited on nickel plates, while Pb-210 was indirectly determined through the ingrowth of Po-210. The sources were measured by a-spectrometry.
