The paper presents a new solution using semidefinite programming (SDP) technique to solve the unit commitment (UC) problem. The proposed approach applies interior point method (IPM) for UC problem in a SDP model whose original non-convex integer-value constrains have been replaced with the convex quadratic constraints by introducing the special auxiliary variables. The solution shows only minor mismatches in the integer variables, which are easily corrected by a simple heuristic method. Extensive numerical simulations on different size test cases show that the proposed method has an excellent performance even with large-scale UC problems and can handle the ramp rate constraint efficiently. Therefore, it is a prospective method using SDP technique for mixed-integer optimization problems of power system in the future.
