Mechanical and Thermal Properties of Polylactide Biocomposite Reinforced with Surface Modified Coir Fiber

In this work, mechanical and thermal properties of chemically treated coir fiber reinforced polylactide composites were investigated over a range of fiber content (0-30% w/w). Agro fiber was treated with sodium hydroxide 5% w/v at ambient temperature for 72 h. After the treatment, it was shown the removal of impurities on fiber surface. The biocomposite materials were processed using internal melt mixer and compression molding machine. It was found that tensile modulus, flexural modulus, degree of crystallinity and thermal stability of fiber reinforced polymer composites increased with increased fiber content. The highest tensile modulus and flexural modulus were also measured for 30% fiber/polylactide with 1.2 and 3.2 GPa, respectively. Alkali treatment of fiber increased the interfacial bonding strength, the wettability of fiber by polylactide and matrix crystallinity leading to the enhancement in mechanical and thermal properties of the composites.
