For improving the capability of directly fabricating of non-horizontal overhanging surface by selective laser melting, the process factors of overhanging surface fabricating limitation were studied by experiments. By use of 316L stainless steel, the overhanging plane models with different inclined angles and overhanging curved surface model were designed and experimented. It's found that the critical angle of undersurface forming could be increased by enhancing the preset powder density. On the condition of layer thickness 25 μm, the fabrication accuracy of overhanging surface was best: the warping of overhanging surface was minimized, and the critical angle of completed overhanging surface got 30° when laser scanning energy was 0.15~0.2 J/mm. The research results were verified by fabricating customized parts with overhanging structure. The dimensional accuracies of overhanging structures on fabricating parts were 0.1 mm below in building direction and 0.01 mm in horizon.
