Objective
To review current literature regarding depression and anxiety in women with cardiovascular disease.
Data Sources
Publications retrieved from database searches using multiple medical subject headings including depression, anxiety, behavioral symptoms, affective symptoms, cardiovascular disease.
Study Selection
Large clinical trials, cohort studies, studies reporting gender-specific outcomes were included in the review.
Data Extraction
Independent extraction by multiple observers was conducted to determine study design, strength of study instruments, adequacy of sample size, and strength of causal inference.
Data Synthesis
Tabular and narrative summaries of study findings are reported.
Conclusions
In women with cardiovascular disease, depression and anxiety are inversely related to quality of life and associated with increased angina, sleep disturbance, and family stress.
