摘要

Mobilities of Cu and In atoms on a stepped Cu(100) surface were derived from low-energy ion scattering measurements of surface atom positions occupied as a function of temperature. It was found, for example, that adatoms have a higher mobility along step edges than on terraces, and that a pair of In adatoms can migrate relatively easily along a step. The experimental results are compared with calculated diffusion barriers and binding energies for surface atoms in several positions, including adatomic positions and positions at steps and at kink sites. In the calculations the atom-embedding model of Finnis and Sinclair [M.W. Finnis and J.E. Sinclair, Philos. Mag. A 50 (1984) 45] was used to describe the interatomic interactions. By means of energy minimization of static lattices the diffusion barriers for different configurations of atoms were determined. The experimental results were found to be reproduced by the calculations in considerable detail.
