摘要

The influence of diet on visual performance is a long-standing question. The dietary carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin, for example, create a natural yellow intraocular filter by accumulating in retinal tissue (where they are termed macular pigment). Yellow filters have long been thought to improve visual performance by absorbing scattered light within the eye and enhancing visibility of a target relative to its background. More recent data suggest the pigments may also influence higher-level visual processing.
