Recent studies, including two in this issue of Molecular Cell (Elbatsh et al., 2016; Beckouet et al., 2016), cast light on how cohesin regulators harness the energy of ATP hydrolysis to open the cohesin ring and enable dynamic, regulated entrapment of chromosomes.
