A novel multiple resolution analysis method

Wavelet analysis as a popular multiple resolution analysis method has to confront some challenging puzzles, e.g., how to effectively chooses base wavelet? Can it localize frequency with any scale (e.g., fractional value)? Such questions make it difficul to be employed in certain engineering applications where flexible and practical frequency scales are required. To meet this end, a novel multiple resolution analysis, matching filter banks (MFB), is proposed for signal decomposition and reconstruction. Simplicity and flexibility of its design and application make MFB a promising method for multiple resolution analysis. Its application to harmonic analysis exhibits good results and demonstrates the effectiveness of this new algorithm.
