A cadmium complex [Cd(cinnamato)(2)(Phen)](2) was synthesized by the reaction of cinnamic acid, phenanthroline (phen), and Cd(C1O(4))(2)center dot 6H(2)O. It crystallizes in trichnic, space group P1, with a=1.1421(13) nm, b=1.157 6(13) nm, c=2.1061(2) nm, alpha=80.307(2)degrees, beta=77.334(2)degrees, gamma=71.630(2)degrees, V=2.563 4(5) nm(3), D-c= 1.521 g . cm(-3), Z=:2, M-r= 586.90, mu =0.891 mm(-1), F(000) = 1 184, the final R =0.031 7, wR =0.067 5. The crystal structure shows that the cadmium ion is coordinated with two nitrogen atoms from one phen molecule and five oxygen atoms respectively from three cinnamic acids, giving a pentagonal bipyramid coordination geometry.
