Wide-area implementations of synchrophasors enable real-time monitoring of power system dynamic responses during disturbances. These disturbances generally excite oscillatory modes of the system which can become problematic if the modes are either poorly damped or negatively damped. This paper describes a Fourier based automatic ringdown analysis algorithm proposed for extracting dominant oscillatory modal content of power system responses from multiple synchrophasor measurements. This approach is well suited for detecting electromechanical oscillatory modes in real-time. The proposed method is shown to be robust under noisy conditions by testing with simulation data as well as real system data, and is able to extract multiple problematic oscillatory modes computationally fast.
