Microbiological reduction of xanthohumol and 4-methoxychalcone

Xanthohumol isolated from the spent hops (after their industrial supercrit. CO2 and extn.) and 4-methorychalcone were biotransformed by using the Rhodotorula marina AM 77 yeast culture. Xanthohumol was converted to alpha,beta-dihydroxanthohumol (yield 18%). Analogous biotransformation of 4-methoxychalcone gave 4-methoxydihydrochalcone and 3-(4-methoxyphenyl)-1-phenylpropan-1-ol (yields 20% and 65%, resp.).
