摘要

Generally, in clinical analytical assays, when the detection system requires a bio-molecular recognition event like in biosensor technology, antibody-based detection methodologies are still considered the standard assays. These assays are well established and they have been demonstrated to reach the desired sensitivity and selectivity. However, the use of antibodies could encounter some limitations. In order to circumvent some of these drawbacks, other recognition molecules have been explored as alternatives.
In the recent years, attention has turned toward reagents, known as nucleic acid aptamers. Aptamers are made from short strands of DNA or RNA that adopt specific three-dimensional conformations allowing biorecognition of specific target proteins or small molecules. Interesting features of these molecule for clinical applications are summarized in this review.
