The key to rearing healthy calves is to keep the infection pressure low, and make sure the immunity and resistance of the calf is as high as possible. %26lt;br%26gt;The most important measures are: %26lt;br%26gt;High standards of hygiene in the calving area and subsequent calf housing area. %26lt;br%26gt;Immediate removal of the dairy calf from the dam. %26lt;br%26gt;Good colostrum management, i.e. 3L of colostrum within 2 hours from birth for the average size Holstein dairy calf. %26lt;br%26gt;Adequate level of further nutrition for the dairy calf, i.e. at least 15% of the calf%26apos;s birth weight in whole milk or high quality milk replacer per day. %26lt;br%26gt;Adequate management of diarrhoeic calves: Continued milk feeding and additional provision of good quality oral electrolyte solutions.
