An efficient synthesis of 1,5-benzodiazepine derivatives by lanthanide trichloride-catalyzed condensation of o-phenylenediamine with alpha,beta-unsaturated ketone under mild conditions

The condensation of o-phenylenediamine with various alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones was efficiently catalyzed by lanthanide trichloride and a variety of 1,5-benzodiazepines were synthesized in moderate to high yields under mild conditions. The reactions catalyzed by ytterbium trichloride were investigated emphatically.
